At the Cart Shed, we believe that being involved in nature has benefits for everyone.
Volunteer
Volunteering with The Cart Shed gives you the chance to learn new skills, meet a wide range of people and do something rewarding in your spare time.
We have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers who support our occupational therapists, mental health practitioners and tutors with: gardening, driving, cooking, green woodworking and willow craft.
Producing delicious and nutritious soups for participants, volunteers and staff on wood-burning stoves. Ingredients will include using produce grown at The Cart Shed – you can venture into the polytunnels and pick what you want to put in the soup that day!
Cooks require food safety certification – training can be arranged and paid for by The Cart Shed where required.
Transporting our participants from Hereford, Leominster or Kington to our site in Norton Canon in our two minibuses. The morning pick up is at approximately 9am and the afternoon collection from site is at 3pm.
All you need to be a driver with us is a full driving licence (with no more than 3 penalty points) and be over 25. We will give you; a full induction to drive our minibuses and a DBS check that is paid for and arranged by us.
Cooks
Drivers
Tasks will include chopping and maintaining the supply of firewood, building and maintenance of paths and structures, managing fires and tool care.
Willow Craft Support Tutors
Cultivating, harvesting and preparing willow, managing the workspace and tools for a range of weaving techniques and supporting participants in learning the art of creating a variety of willow crafts.
Site Maintenance
Maintaining the polytunnels and outdoor raised bed area and growing vegetables for the cooks to use in their meals for participants, volunteers and staff. Tasks will include general garden maintenance, sowing, pricking out, potting on, pruning, composting, watering, weeding and DIY tasks. Experience of gardening is desirable but not essential.
Green woodworking support tutors
Supporting tutors with green woodworking. Previous experience as a competent coppicer, green woodworker or carpenter is desirable to assist with a range of woodland craft activities.
Horticulture
'...I am now regularly driving a minibus for The Cart Shed. I have met some great people and often stay on for the day to spend time with them in the woods. I am very well supported by the staff and really look forward to my weekly drive around the Herefordshire countryside.'

All of The Cart Shed’s volunteering roles require an enhanced DBS check which we will arrange and pay for. Two personal references from non family members will be sought. All of our volunteers will have access to support but will need to work independently with minimal supervision..
